TrellisWare Demonstrates Interference Cancellation Technology at Multiple Events

Communications in congested and contested spectrum environments is challenging for today’s warfighter. TrellisWare is leading the way to enable robust communications in the presence of jammers using advanced interference mitigation techniques. Engineers from TrellisWare recently demonstrated two interference cancellation technologies to the US Army: Joint Analog and Digital Interference Cancellation (JADIC), and referenceless interference cancellation. The successful demonstrations energized the community with innovative ways on how to achieve robust communications in the presence of strong interference.

TrellisWare recently demonstrated the cancellation capability of TrellisWare’s JADIC technology as a tethered interference cancellation system that provides effective communications in the presence of powerful jammers. JADIC enables simultaneous communications and jamming operations by removing the strong jammer signal from the incoming received signal, enabling reliable communications.

The demonstration consisted of injecting a representative interference signal into the receiver path using an arbitrary waveform generator, while the TSM™ waveform running on TrellisWare’s TW-950 TSM Shadow™ radios acted as the over-the-air signal of interest. With JADIC enabled, the demo achieved reliable voice and network communications in the presence of strong interference.

The technology combines both analog and digital cancellation to provide better cancellation performance in the presence of any co-located interferer. JADIC provides > 70 dB combined analog and digital cancellation over a 30 MHz instantaneous bandwidth, and provides a vehicular solution offering reference-based cancellation (co-located with interference signal).

The future for JADIC technology is bright, as TrellisWare is leveraging the technology for Same Frequency Simultaneous Transmit and Receive (SF-STAR) capability. An SF-STAR system can nearly double the system capacity in the same bandwidth relative to a standard system.

A second, separate demonstration highlighted TrellisWare’s referenceless interference cancellation that enables reliable communication in the presence of unfriendly or friendly jamming when an interferer reference signal is not available. With referenceless cancellation, the mitigation process does not require a reference copy of the interference signal. The technology exploits signal structures to estimate and excise the interferer, enabling reliable communications. Referenceless interference cancellation enables dismounted communications near a strong interferer and provides 20-40 dB of interference cancellation.

The event highlighted the cancellation abilities of TrellisWare’s referenceless interference mitigation technique as implemented on TrellisWare’s latest and newest TSM Shadow radio communications receive signal in space processing. The setup for the demo included injecting a representative interferer signal into the signal path, between two TrellisWare TW-950 TSM Shadow radios. With the referenceless interference mitigation active, the signal was reliably received in the presence of the strong jammer.

The next steps for TrellisWare’s referenceless interference cancellation work includes full integration with TrellisWare’s Barrage Relay™ networking for use in large-scale deployments, and expansion of cancellation techniques to mitigate a wider array of interference signals.

Virginia Beach, Virginia, August 21, 2018 – TrellisWare Technologies, Inc. (, announced today the recent success of its 3rd annual Technology Working Group event, held in Virginia Beach from August 14–16, 2018. TrellisWare hosted representatives from a wide range of government organizations and industry partners from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The three-day event focused on the growing TSM™ waveform ecosystem and upcoming technologies to meet today’s tactical communication challenges. TSM is the leading MANET waveform suitable for operation in real tactical environments. The TSM waveform is commercially developed by TrellisWare and capable of running on Software Defined Radios (SDR).

Industry partners presented their latest products and capabilities, including ways they are leveraging TrellisWare’s TSM waveform and miniaturized TSM single board SDR module to address emerging requirements from end-users.  Industry-led discussions provided insight into the major Program-of-Record (PoR) and non-PoR radio platforms and associated families of products. Several other partners presented new solutions in the areas of end-user applications, soldier systems, and platform integration that deliver innovative capabilities over the TSM network.

The expanding TSM waveform ecosystem enables interoperability between a wide range of partner vendors’ radios, sensors, systems, and TrellisWare radios, enhancing the value of the network. Some key highlights from the working group included the incorporation of the TSM waveform on the US Army Leader Radio and Manpack Radio systems, as well as the use of TSM to enable the tactical networking within the US Army’s Integrated Tactical Network (ITN) architecture.

By the end of the week, the successful event provided the opportunity for TrellisWare, broader industry, and government representatives to collaborate, and learn from one another. Everyone walked away with new insights for improving and solving issues they face in their own tactical communications, and commitment to continue working together collaboratively as a community to deliver rapid cutting-edge innovations.

Let’s face it, the promises of Mobile Ad-hoc Networking (MANET) are very appealing: a wireless network that is decentralized, does not rely on infrastructure, supports a variety of applications in a range of environments, and is suitable for mission-critical operations. MANETs are self-forming and self-healing networks that allow radio nodes to move around freely as the network topology changes, providing ubiquitous connectivity to all users.

However, the challenges that MANETs face when used in real tactical environments can limit their effectiveness. These include limited spectrum, high mobility, harsh RF conditions such as multipath fading, diverse missions, and frequent re-tasking and reorganization of network nodes. Traditional MANETs relay information in a multi-hop fashion, where each node acts as a router to forward traffic to other nodes in the network. This use of IP routing requires constant tracking of the links between all radio nodes. When fielded in real tactical environments where things change continually, the management of these radio links creates significant overhead, especially as the network increases in size. The result is poor scalability, low reliability, and high network complexity—often requiring gateway radios to stitch groups together.

TrellisWare’s Barrage Relay technology with its unique design introduces an alternative MANET approach that outperforms these traditional routing-based MANETs. Barrage Relay networking is non-routing, it assumes no supporting infrastructure, and it requires only minimal network knowledge. Barrage Relay is digital signal processing, it is a networking and waveform solution ideal for use in Software Defined Radios (SDR) and not dependent on unique hardware for optimization. Since Barrage Relay eliminates the need for routing protocols, it allows for constant mobility and massive scalability with very low overhead.

Barrage Relay networking was designed with a robust physical layer that incorporates receive-side collaborative combining techniques to handle extreme RF multipath fading and enable simultaneous relaying of all transmissions, including voice, data, video, and Position Location Information (PLI).  Barrage Relay enables massive scalability and extremely fast network adaptability. With network join time less than 1 second and network formation/merge time of less than 5 seconds, Barrage Relay supports true tactical agility required for real world deployment.

TrellisWare Technologies is proud to support Saber Strike 18, a military exercise across many European countries involving thousands of soldiers from primarily NATO allies. Led by the United States Army Europe, the exercise seeks to build readiness and cohesion between coalition partners in a large scale, complex environment.

TrellisWare team members have been supporting the Saber Strike event since April, issuing radios, providing classroom training to soldiers, as well as configuring and integrating radios with the Nett Warrior communications system. TrellisWare representatives are currently in Europe supporting the 173rd, 2CR, and 1-508th troops.

TrellisWare is providing unparalleled voice and communication data links. The soldiers are using the AN/PRC-148C IMBITR equipped with TrellisWare’s TSM™ waveform, and they are also using CUB™ radios and TSM Ghost™ radios. Many soldiers carrying TrellisWare® radios are connected to Android™ devices; this combination delivers soldiers unprecedented situational awareness at all levels of the formation.

The TSM waveform supports Battalion-level communications, supporting 250+ radios in a single, flat network with no need for gateways or additional hardware. The waveform supports simultaneous voice, data, video, and position location information (PLI), and flexible bandwidth in the UHF, L-band, and S-band. The TrellisWare radios are providing soldiers in the Saber Strike exercise with reliable voice communications, data and PLI to everyone in their network.  The PLI is shared for a larger common operational picture, giving leaders a more comprehensive, real-time view of the entire battle picture.

May 22–24 in Tampa, Florida, TrellisWare Technologies, Inc., is exhibiting in booth #410 at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) & Exhibition, showcasing our next generation family of radios. This year we are unveiling new products that complement the TSM Shadow™ radio. Among these new products are embeddable solutions that further enable integration of the TSM™ waveform into TrellisWare partners’ products.

The TW-950 TSM Shadow radio is now in production. The radio provides an expanded frequency range covering L-UHF, U-UHF, and L/S-bands, higher throughputs for streaming multiple HD videos, and is interoperable with devices that run TSM-X™ waveform functionality. For tailoring your network needs an abundance of new accessories are available for TSM Shadow. These include audio and USB cables accessible from the top cap of the radio, expanded side connectors for simplified use, a wide range of antennas, and new power options.

New variants of the TSM Ghost™ product are in the line-up. The TW-870 is a data modem designed for embedding into host platforms in fast deployed mobile ad-hoc networking scenarios. It features external power, data, GPS and RF antenna connectors, and Ethernet via a cable adapter. The TW-875 is a relay and tracking device with a built-in battery, perfect for situational awareness and real-time intelligence. It features GPS and RF connectors, internal and external power, data connector, and a small LCD display.

Other products supporting the ever-expanding TSM network include the TW-650 TSM Shadow module, a single-board software defined radio (SDR) architected for embedment into a wide range of systems, including tactical communications platforms, network devices, and unmanned systems. And currently in conceptual stages, the high powered vehicular form factor TW-150 radio is a 20 W amplifier that covers UHF and L/S-band frequencies.

The proven TSM™ waveform compliments interoperability with the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) MANET for SOF Tactical Communications (STC) radios, including the STC Next Generation Handheld (NGHH) and Next Generation Manpack (NGMP). As the primary MANET for USSOCOM, the TSM waveform enables reliable and scalable networking in real tactical environments, when it matters most.
